Scott Walker Hickey was born in Denton, Texas in 1968 and is a graduate of Denton High School. After receiving his bachelor's degree from Baylor University in 1990 he went on to follow in his father Don E. Hickey's footsteps and achieve his law degree from South Texas College of Law in 1993. Returning to Denton after law school, the Denton County Commissioner's Court appointed Scott to serve on the Denton County Building and Properties Subcommittee where he provided input on the design and creation of the current Denton County Courthouse and Jail facilities. As a second generation lawyer, he joined the family practice in Denton and enjoyed that relationship with his father for almost four years.

However, Scott felt a calling to public service and joined the U.S. Army as a Judge Advocate. After graduating from the U.S. Army Airborne School at Ft. Benning, Georgia, Scott was assigned to Red River Army Depot where he served for over three years representing the Army Materiel Command in procurements, labor issues and environmental matters. During that time, he also served as a Special Assistant U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Texas, Texarkana Division, prosecuting criminal cases before the Federal Magistrate.

The summer of 2000 he and his family were reassigned to Ft. Bragg, North Carolina where Scott was a Trial Defense Counsel for the famed 82d Airborne Division. On September 11, 2001, Scott was giving a briefing to a group of soldiers when the unthinkable happened...our country was attacked. The needs of the Army caused Scott to be reassigned to XVIII Airborne Corps to join the staff of General Dan K. McNeill and then Brigadier General Stanley McChrystal which would deploy to Afghanistan to become the first major command and control center for that theater of operations. Once in Afghanistan, Scott worked as an operational law planner, supporting Operation Enduring Freedom.

While at Ft. Bragg, he was appointed as a magistrate judge to hear pretrial confinement hearings to determine whether soldiers accused of violations of the Uniform Code of Military Justice should be confined pending trial. Hearing these matters involved a process of skillfully determining whether the government met its burden to deprive a soldier of their freedom and wading through the arguments of defense counsel as to why not.

After being honorably discharged from the Army, Scott joined his current firm and has worked with Dick and John for almost 15 years. His focus from the restart of his civilian practice has been oil, gas and mineral law and he became the first attorney in Denton County to become board certified in Oil, Gas and Mineral Law. Scott is a frequent speaker on probate, guardianship and oil, gas and mineral law issues. He currently serves on the Level I appointment list as a probate and guardianship attorney, as well as mediator, for the Denton County Probate Court.

When not in the office Scott enjoys spending time with his wife Ashley and their three children, working on the family's ranches, archery, trail running and serving in the elementary Sunday school department of his church.
